What's Happening in Our Community?


 - The Mineral County Health Department still has a supply of the H1N1 vaccine. To
make an appointment to receive the vaccine, call the health department at
(304) 788-1321.

  - The Bruce High School Class of 1947 will meet Tuesday, Jan. 26, at 11:30 a.m. at
the Hamburger Haven in McCoole, MD.

 - The Keyser High School Class of 1961 will meet Tuesday, Jan. 26, at 6 p.m. at the
Candlewyck Inn in Keyser. All classmates and guests are welcome to attend.

 - Study Abroad infromational meetings will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 26, 11 a.m. to
1:30 p.m. and again, Wednesday, Jan. 27, 6 to 7:30 p.m., in the Heritage Room in
University Place at Potomac State College of West Virginia University. Students,
Faculty, staff, and members of the community are invited to attend and learn how
they can experience the culture and cuisine of Europe this coming summer. Plus,
students will have the unique opportunity to earn six credits. Chef Thomas Vieli,
instructor for the Hospitiality and Tourism program at the College, willl host the
Study Abroad Trip to Switzerland and Italy scheduled for May 30 through June

 - The Mayor and Council of Piedmont will NOT meet on Wednesday, Jan. 13.
The next regular meeting will be held on Wednesday, Jan 27, at 6 p.m.

 - The Frankfort District Garden Club will meet at Cindi's Resturant in Fort Ashby
at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 27. Dinner is at 5 p.m. for those who choose.
Anyone is welcome to join.

 - The Potomac Highlands Maple Fest will hold a planning meeting on Thursday,
Jan 28, at 6 p.m. in the large group room at Keyser High School.

 - Longaberger Basket Bingo will be held at New Creek School on Sun., Jan. 31
at 2 p.m. Twenty-five baskets, with a combined value of $2000, will be given away.
Tickets are $20 and may be purchased at the school or by calling (304) 788-4849,
(304) 289-3732, or (304) 788-2811. Tickets will also be available at the door.
Refreshments will be sold.

 - The American Red Cross Bloodmobile will visit the Keyser American Legion on
Tuesday, Feb. 2, from noon to 6 p.m. Donors must be 17 years old (16 years 
with parental consent in Maryland), weigh at least 110 pounds, and in generally good
health. for more information, call the Western Potomac Chapter of the American Red

 - The Potomac Valley Chapter of West Virginia Alumni and Friends wil meet on
Tuesday, Feb. 2, at 6 p.m. at the Mineral County Board of Education Student
Services Office behind Denny's. All alumni and friends are welcome.

 - The Mineral County Historical Society will present a tribute to jazz artist Don
Redman on Wednesday, Feb. 3, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Piedmont.
The program will feature Redman's music performed by the Classic Jazz Quartet,
plus video excerpts from the Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Dinner and
reservations must be no later that Sunday, Jan. 31, by contacting Nancy Marshall
at (304) 788-5882. There is no cost for attending just the program.

 - The Short Gap Volunteer Fire Company will hold their next hoagie sale on
Thursday, Feb. 4, and Friday, Feb 5. 12-inch ham or turkey hoagies wil be
available at the fire company dining room from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5,
or until sold out. To order a hoagie for pick up, call Carlee Wilhelm at
(304) 788-9478. Orders must be received no later than Feb. 1.

 - Phoebe's Friends Relay for Life team will sponser a spaghetti dinner on Sunday
Feb. 7, beginning at 11 a.m., at the Burlington Fire Hall. Menu: Spaghetti, salad,
Italian bread, dessert, coffee, and tea. Free will offering will be accepted. Proceeds
benefit the American Cancer Society Relay for Life.

 - The WVU Extension Service will be hosting the second Producer Meeting on
Monday, Feb. 8, at 6 p.m. at Sunnyside Church. Dale Hawkins, former chef for
Stonewall Resort, will present "Value Added", a how-to guide and tips on adding
value to our produce and other agricultural commodities. To register or for more

 - The Frankfort District Historical Society will meet at 5 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 10,
2010, at Cindi's Restaurant in Fort Ashby, celebrating its 22nd anniversary. Mr. Jim
